Foster Family Program
Our name,
Advent, represents the coming of a new day...and
new hope... for troubled children. Our Foster
Family Program focuses on providing abused and
neglected children loving Christian foster homes
where, with the help and expertise of qualified
case workers and counselors, their deep needs
can be addressed. We also offer training, counseling,
support and financial assistance for our foster
parents.

Frequently Asked Questions
What types of children are
placed in foster homes?
You can help children of all ages and ethnicities
who are dealing with issues of abuse, neglect
and family dysfunction by opening your heart and
home.
What is the length of placement?
You have the opportunity to serve children through
both short and long term care, often until age
18.
Where do you recruit your
foster families?
Foster families are recruited from churches throughout
the community, drawing families from various denominations
and races in order to provide the best match between
family and child.
How do I get a child placed
in my home?
Children are referred to Advent by the Social
Services Department. If a match looks promising,
an information packet is requested from the social
worker, to include recent court reports, placement
history, psychological reports, and school placement
information. An interview is then conducted with
the child to determine whether he/she is appropriate
for your home.
Is special training needed
for prospective foster parents?
We begin orientation with 12 hours of training
and a Foster Care Handbook for easy reference
on policies and procedures. Orientation training
may include, but will not be limited to:
* First aid
* Stages of child and psychological development
* Parenting and disciplining an abused child
* Special needs children with emotional and psychological
disturbances
* Communication skill-building for parents
* The role of the natural parent in foster home
placement
* The role and responsibilities of the agency
including: the monthly stipend, use of MedCal,
support meetings, etc.
* Licensing rules and regulations
